IELTS Academic VS IELTS General Test
IELTS Academic and IELTS General test are the two types of IELTS test. A lot of students face a tough time deciding between these two. Many of them do not even know the difference between the IELTS Academic and IELTS General test.
The basic difference between these two, is that, if you are applying for college or a new profession then you take the IELTS Academic test. And if you are moving to a new country for immigration purposes then you need to take the IELTS General test.
The IELTS Listening Test is about 30 minutes and 40 minutes total. The test is divided into four sections with 10 questions in each. There is a different recording for each section. For the first two sections, an academic conversation and an academic monologue will be played. While for the latter sections, a general conversation and a general monologue will be played. At the end of the test, there are ten minutes to transfer all the answers to an answer sheet.
On the contrary, the IELTS Speaking Test is between 11 to 15 minutes in duration. In the test, the test-taker give an interview to a certified IELTS interviewer. The test is divided into three parts. In the first part of speaking test, the interviewer asks questions regarding the life and family of the test taker. For the second part of speaking test, interviewer gives a topic to the test-taker, that is known as cue card round. And in the last part or third part of speaking test, the test-taker speaks on the given topic.
In the IELTS Academic test, the writing part is of 60 minutes and is divided into two tasks in total. In the first task, the test-takers describe or explain a graph/table. The test-takers also summarize the information of the task in their own words. And for the second task, students write a formal essay in response to a problem or an argument.
On the other hand, the IELTS General test the tasks are quite different. Though the time duration and the number of tasks is the same. In the first task, test-takers write a letter regarding a particular situation. The tone of the letter can be formal or personal. And in the second task, the test-takers write an essay responding to an argument. The essay can be informal and personal in tone,
In the IELTS Academic test, the duration of the reading part of the test is 60 minutes. The test consists of 40 questions in total. The test includes three texts passages and each text is of different style and tone. Texts can be descriptive, factual and analytical. All the forty questions are based on these three texts.
Comparatively, in the IELTS General test, the time and questions length are the same as the academic test. But the format of the test is completely different. The test is divided into three sections and each section comes up with different texts. The first section consists of two or three texts, while the second section includes two tests. And the third section comes up with one long piece of text. All these texts are related to general life and routine.

The IELTS General test and the IELTS Academic test are different in their own ways. While the Academic test is suitable for students, the General test is suitable for professionals who are planning to migrate. There is no point is assessing the difference in difficulty level, due to the difference in content of the tests.
